Old Man and the Whale
Sunshine, beach, ocean… and fish! Rinascita, surrounded entirely by the sea, thrives on its love for fishing. A young man named Ishmael will guide you to the Riccioli Islands, a fishing paradise like no other...
Find the fisherman
Ishmael: Ah, call me Ishmael. Well, well! The Laureate, I presume? Have you ever tried fishing before?
Ishmael: The trick to it is a flexible line and a subtle lure.
Ishmael: Fancy trying your hand at deep sea fishing? It's one of Rinascita's many lasting traditions, like the Carnevale.
Rover:
Ishmael: Wonderful, then I've got a good place for you. Riccioli Islands, north of Ragunna. It's right where the currents of the Stormy Sea meet, drawing in swarms of fish.
Ishmael: And if you're alone, angling on a fishing boat would suit you better. A net will just get you tangled up in trouble.
Ishmael: Once you reach the islands, go visit an old captain called Ahab. He'll be more than glad to show you the ropes.
Ishmael: I've got to make my way back to the islands myself. There's a boat at the harbor that'll take you straight there. Just let the boatman know you're off for some fishing!
Find the Gondolier to prepare for the voyage to the Riccioli Islands
Gondolier: Are you the one looking for a ride to Riccioli?
Rover:
Gondolier: Take a seat, and we'll be on our way!
Search for the old captain, "Ahab"
Gondolier: Seeking out old Ahab, are you? He should be at the harbor over there.
Gondolier: He's no ordinary man, I tell you that. You'll spot him a mile away.
???: Zzz... Zzz...
???: Huh? Hmm... All right, cut it out...
???: Oh! Ahoy! A fish! We have a bite!
???: Well, don't just stand there, laddie! Gimme a hand with this thing!
???: Oh, wait! Easy does it...
???: That's gotta be one hefty fish...
Rover:
???: A big fella like that? He won't be gettin' away from me, just a matter of time, no bother at all.
???: You must be that young'un Ishmael mentioned.
Rover:
Ahab: Aye, good! You've come to the right place. The name's Ahab, and I've been tied to this harbor longer than most.
Ahab: That octopus merchant over there is Planck. It has all you need, from fishing gear to boat repairs.
Ahab: But... I see you don't have a boat. We can fix that! You can use mine!
Rover:
Ahab: The ones we use here for fishing are different from what you'll find in the city. We treat 'em like family—live and die together, we do.
Ahab: She's called Rachel. Gettin' on in years, but she's still got some fire in her.
Ahab: Since I retired, it's been a while since she and I crashed some waves. I reckon she misses the old fishing days as much as I do.
Ahab: Well, now that we've shared a bit of fishing, I'd say we've forged a bond, eh?
Ahab: What do you say we chase that big fella that gave us the slip? Let's head straight out to sea!
Ahab: I'd like to see what kind of fish dares to run away from old Ahab!
Speak with Planck and get ready to set sail
Speak to Planck to upgrade the ship's technology
With the fish back in the net, go chat with Ahab
Ahab: Ahoy! That was some mighty fine sailing back there!
Ahab: You picked it up quickly. Good, good!
Ahab: Ah, don't forget to stop by the market when ye've got time to spare.
Ahab: Minding the helm is only half the battle. You've got to know how to trade, too!
Visit the market in Riccioli Port
Seafood Dealer: …Oi, the Order's got no authority here. Now, bugger off, will ya.
Young Fisherman: Come on, Mr. Coffin. Didn't she just help you fix your Echo...
Seafood Dealer: Hell if I know what she's playin' at!
Old Lady: Oh, pipe down, Coffin. The wee lassie was just asking you for some directions, for Imperator's sake.
Rover:
Phoebe: I'm sorry…
Phoebe: I'm only looking for Cetus the Tidebreaker. They were injured in Ragunna…
Old Lady: Cetus the Tidebreaker, you say? Well…
Coffin: The Order is not welcome around these parts! Yer hear me?
Young Fisherman: Hey, look. Isn't that the Resonator who showed up in Ragunna a while back? The Laureate…
Ahab: That's enough of that!
Ahab: The Order's left us alone for years. If they really wanted to meddle in our affairs now, you think they'd just send one little girl?
Ahab: We owe our trade to the blessings of Cetus the Tidebreaker and these very seas. Ye're tellin' me we can't accept a wee lass in an Acolyte hat?
Ahab: Besides, do you really think she's helping you out for some devious reason? Being ungrateful isn't our way, is it?
Coffin: But Ahab...
Ahab: Right then, that's enough of that. Business has been hard as it is lately. Break it up, folks.
Ahab: If ye've got more complaints, toss 'em my way. Happy now? Off you go.
Phoebe: Thank you.
Phoebe: I'm here because I want to talk to the villagers about the Tidebreaker. No one has seen them since the Carnevale...
Ahab: Friend of yours, laddie?
Rover:
Ahab: All right, then. But know this—the Order's let these islands drift without a guide, so the folk around here aren't too keen on seeing someone wearin' that kind of hat wanderin' about.
Phoebe: My hat? Err...
Ahab: Anyway, just say ye're here on personal business and ye'll be fine. Now, I hear ye're lookin' for Cetus the Tidebreaker. Well, lucky you, 'cause so am I.
Phoebe: Yes! The Tidebreaker showed unnatural signs during the Carnevale not long ago. I think I sensed their pain and anger...
Ahab: Well, sail around in these waters and ye're bound to run into it, sooner or later. But if you want the simple way... See that lighthouse down yonder?
Ahab: There are four of 'em across Riccioli Islands. As long as their lights are on, the Tidebreaker will answer our pleas as gently as ever.
Ahab: Three of them went dark when the Tidebreaker vanished. Getting them lit again should do the trick.
Ahab: You know what? Why don't you take Miss White Hat here on a wee boat ride, Rover?
Phoebe: A boat ride?
Rover:
Phoebe: W-what? I've only ever read about Riccioli Islands' fishing trade in the Order's library before, but I've never actually fished on the sea...
Ahab: How do you expect the sea to answer yer calls if you don't embrace it yerself?
Ahab: Oh, and hold onto yer "hat" during the ride. If anything else comes up, just come find me.
Phoebe: What did he mean by that, Rover?
Rover:
Phoebe: I see...
Phoebe: Then I'll help however I can with catching fish while we locate the Tidebreaker!

Ahab: Ahoy. How did it go? Pull in a pretty big haul, did ye?
Ahab: I'm gettin' closer to findin' the Tidebreaker meself. Just head over to the Helm Village and look for... What's his name again...?
Ahab: Oh, right! Starbuck!
Ahab: The man's lost a couple of his marbles these past few weeks. People say he only started actin' up after catchin' a glimpse of the Tidebreaker. Anyway, tell him I sent ye.
Ahab: Also, notice that ship?
Ahab: If you want to catch yourself a real prize, ye'll be needin' that one. She's still waitin' on repairs, but the watermen can fill ye in on that.

Search for Starbuck
Starbuck: Hehe... Oh, my sweet...
Starbuck: No one else knows. It's just between us.
Starbuck: Wait for my return, my darling... fiancée...
Phoebe: Er, excuse me, sir? Are you the one who witnessed Cetus the Tidebreaker?
Starbuck: Hmm? Yes, that's me! Are you here to witness our union? Marvelous! Come, according to tradition, a wedding witness must be present.
Phoebe: A wedding witness? Well, the Codex does allow Acolytes to serve as witnesses during weddings.
Rover:
Starbuck: Hehe... Hehehe...
Phoebe: Is he... under some kind of enchantment? I've read of symptoms like this in the Order's archives before.
Phoebe: O Imperator's blessings, gaze upon this...
Rover: W-wait...
Phoebe: Huh? I did what was written in the archives...
Starbuck: Ouch!? You... I'm...
Starbuck: Golden white... Jellyfish... Pitch black... A large fish... Huh? You're human... I'm a fish... No wait... My fish...
Starbuck: Ow, my head hurts... Who are you?
Rover:
Starbuck: Where the hell's my boat? And how did I get here... What?
Starbuck: The fish... My, oh, my... From Serene Bay... The fish... Heeheehee...
Phoebe: He's at it again! Here I go!
Fisherman's Plushie: ...!
Phoebe: Oh? It's you.
Phoebe: Is your leg okay now?
Rover:
Phoebe: I treated their broken leg from a Gondola accident back at the market.
Fisherman's Plushie: ...!
Phoebe: Did... Mr. Coffin ask you to come here?
Phoebe: I think they're trying to say that Mr. Starbuck's Gondola might know something. They're stranded on a reef nearby.
Phoebe: And Mr. Starbuck has been like this for two weeks now...
Fisherman's Plushie: ...! ... !
Phoebe: You want us to use these to free the Gondola?
Phoebe: Hmmm, I fear Mr. Starbuck might not withstand any more of the Order's disenchantment tricks anyway.
Rover:
Phoebe: In that brief moment when Mr. Starbuck seemed to recover, he mentioned his Gondola and a place called Serene Bay.
Phoebe: Finding that boat and uncovering the cause behind his enchantment might be a good starting point.
Rover:
Starbuck: Heehee... Yes, we must have fireworks at our wedding ... "Sweetened fireworks"...
Set sail from the dock and find the abandoned gondola
Go to the location where the Gondola is trapped
Clear the rubble and free the Gondola
Phoebe: Over there!
Phoebe: Huh? Why is there a sweet scent in the air...?
Phoebe: The Gondola is drifting back!
Abandoned Gondola: ...! ...!
The rescued Gondola appears to be shouting something.
Phoebe: You came across a "siren"? A creature with a human body and a fishtail?
Rover:
Rover:
Phoebe: Could there be another being like Lorelei?
Abandoned Gondola: ...?
Phoebe: I suspect that the fish we saw earlier is connected to this "siren."
Phoebe: There's got to be a reason it stayed fresh after all these weeks.
Phoebe: This means we need to think of a way to get that fish out of Mr. Starbuck's hands.
Rover:
Rover:
Phoebe: Would that work?
Rover:
Rover:
Phoebe: Well, only one way to find out.

Starbuck: Oh? My dear witness, have you seen my fiancée around?

Phoebe: I-It's so slippery! Disenchant!
Starbuck: Thieves! You filthy thieves!
Starbuck: Ugh... You... My head...
Starbuck: Who are you? What am I doing with this fish?
Phoebe: Mr. Starbuck? Captain Ahab asked us to come find you.
Starbuck: Old Ahab? Wait, what's going on here?
Rover:
Starbuck: All I remember is being out at sea fishing not long ago.
Starbuck: But all I could hear was a song, drawing me in. It felt like my whole body was being beckoned to follow that tune.
Starbuck: The next thing I knew, I was drifting right out of Serene Bay, where the Tidebreaker is said to slumber.
Starbuck: The singing was still there, like it was rising from the depths. I swear I caught a glimpse of the Cetus's shadow... then another shadow of a massive fish.
Starbuck: Oh, the curves of that shadow. A true beauty...
Starbuck: I tossed everything I had into the sea, anything that could serve as bait, but still, it wouldn't bite.
Starbuck: Then, I felt a tug on the line as the singing grew louder... and everything went blank after that.
Rover:
Starbuck: Yes! That's the one!
Starbuck: Wait, wait! Where is it...
Starbuck: Key! The key... Blast it, where'd that key go?
Starbuck: The key... I used it as bait...
Rover:
Starbuck reaches inside the blue fish and pulls out a key…
Starbuck: Aha! I knew it! Molto bene! Got gobbled up by the fish!
Starbuck: Old Ahab had me keep it. You'll be needing it too, yes?
A key covered in rust. Seems like it's seen better days...
Starbuck: I can't recall much after that, but no doubt the Tidebreaker did make an appearance in Serene Bay.
Starbuck: If you're looking for it, go take a look around the bay. Oh, and thanks for the help...
Phoebe: Are you...
Starbuck: I'm forty-seven years old this year. After all these years at sea, I've caught more fish than you can imagine.
Starbuck: But the right fish and the right person have yet to cross my path.
Starbuck: Oh, but this beautiful lady here—
Rover:
Phoebe: Farewell, Mr. Starbuck.
Phoebe: I wish you the best! May Imper... May the sea bring you blessings!
Starbuck: Uh, right... Okay then...

You check your belongings...
You find a bizarre fish, its color all wrong, and its eyes glow with an unsettling shimmer.
Rover: Nothing's lost, except now we've got this...
Phoebe: What a strange fish...
Rover: How about we take it to Planck? Maybe it knows what this is.

Ahab: "There'll be monsters swarming in those waters, ever since Cetus went missing."
Ahab: "Word is, the key to Serene Bay's lighthouse got lost long ago. We only know it's somewhere at the bottom of the sea."
Ahab: "Oh, I reckon you'll be greeted by a few strange fish along the way."
Ahab: "I'll keep poking around and see what else I can dig up. I'll have Planck send word once I've got news."

Find Ahab and learn about the final island
Ahab: I'm gettin' old... Starbuck... old...
Ahab: Let it take out the Albatross... This time I'll...
Ahab: Ah, you're here.
Ahab: That island Tidebreaker ran off to is also known as Reyes Ruins. They say it's filled with old mysteries.
Ahab: The storm ragin' over it seems to keep folks from settin' foot there. Its own protection, if ye will.
Ahab: But not to worry, I've already found a way to get past it.
Ahab: If Starbuck isn't pullin' my leg, that storm and the siren are in cahoots. Which means...
Ahab: Come on, let's move out! You and Miss White Hat will team up, and I'll be with Starbuck.
Ahab: There's a wee island just east of the ruins. We'll meet there.
Sail from the dock to the small island designated by Ahab
Starbuck: You see, Captain. What did I tell you?
Phoebe: It says here, "Riccioli, shower Neptunia with your light. The usurper slumbers in the depths of Reyes. Offer your love to Reyes' descendants and the eternal life of the sea."
Ahab: What's all this nonsense?
Phoebe: Riccioli corresponds to Neptunia in Rinascitan astrology. In other words, the island is surrounded by the deepest waters in all of Rinascita.
Ahab: Ho, ho. You know your astrology well, Miss White Hat.
Phoebe: I'm just stating what everyone in Rinascita knows. It's also mentioned in the legends of the Sentinel Imperator.
Rover:
Phoebe: I... I'm not sure.
Ahab: "Offer your love..."
Ahab: So it's asking us to fall in love with somethin'? That's just plain odd!
Ahab: Bleh.
Ahab: O great, noble descendants of Reyes, hear my words! I offer ye me love!
Ahab: Umm... I shall offer ye my love! The ceaseless waves shall be my pledge of loyalty to you for all eternity!
Ahab: Bah, I'm gettin' too old for this! What dunderheaded idea is this, anyway!
Ahab: Go on, laddie. You give it a go!
Rover:
Ahab: Aye, you. Just a few words, for the love of the sea! What, need a pen and paper, do ye?
Rover:
Rover:
Starbuck: No, no, no! You're all doing it wrong!
Starbuck: What do you take love for? Is this a joke to you?
Starbuck: Step aside!
Starbuck: My love. You are the light of my life.
Starbuck: No storm can keep us apart, for in your presence, the might of my love can withstand any tempest, for it is even stronger!
Starbuck: My soul yearns to break free, for it has found its direction, yet I am tormented by my inability to reach you...
Ahab: It's working! It's working!
Starbuck: Oh, my dearest love—
Ahab: That's enough of that! Let's move out! We've got no time to dawdle!
Discuss the island with Phoebe and begin the investigation
Phoebe: Rover, have you noticed that something doesn't feel right about Captain Ahab?
Phoebe: I can't say what it is for certain... But I just have a feeling that he's hiding something from us.
Phoebe: Why don't we split up the search?
Phoebe: If there's a connection between this island and Tidebreaker, I'm sure we'll find something, especially with all the scattered ruins.
Phoebe: I can decipher these ancient Rinascitan texts. We'll have the truth soon enough.
Ahab: Splendid! Now that we got rid of that storm, Planck can swim over here!
Ahab: Can't say the same for Queequeg, though. The repaired Pequod is awaitin' her new captain before she can set sail.
Ahab: Let's take a look around. Don't know much about the lighthouse here in Reyes, but I'll have that siren hangin' from the tip of me mast by day's end, ye mark me words.
Ahab: You did well back there, Rover.
Ahab: Not everyone can survive the weight of the sea. She's a merciful mistress, but she can be merciless, too.
Ahab: Even in dreams, I see meself hurlin' sharp harpoons into the water. They must sink deep before they strike with true power and precision.
Ahab: Though we are blessed by the sea, we stand ready to point our harpoons at it... and at that fella.
Ahab: Strife, chaos... endless conflict. This is the fate of those who live with the tides.
Ahab: How nice... Did you know? Some people die at the tide's ebb, some at low water...
Ahab: Some at the full of the flood. And I'm just a billow that kisses the storm.
Ahab: Go, Captain. Do what you must and whatever your heart desires.
Starbuck: Ugh. Hello...
Starbuck: Oh, actually, I should thank you.
Starbuck: If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have gotten this far.
Starbuck: Well... Captain Ahab has his own ambitions. So do I.
Starbuck: *Sign* My beloved. Wait for me, will you?
Starbuck: But then again, not too late is it, even now, to desist... Behold!
Starbuck: Ahab, you old fool! It seeks you not! It is you, you, that madly seeks him!

Phoebe: We managed to get all four lighthouses lit again, Rover!
Phoebe: Do you hear the Tidebreaker's cries? They don't sound as sad, hurt, and angry as they did before.
Rover:
Phoebe: I've managed to decode inscriptions from a few stone tablets I found inside the ruins.
Phoebe: Cetus the Tidebreaker... is deeply connected to the Sentinel Imperator.
Phoebe: Some of these ancient stone tablets tell of tales from long before the Order ever existed.
Phoebe: Besides Cetus the Tidebreaker, I've also found information about the "siren" that might have enchanted Mr. Starbuck.
Phoebe: It's a Remnant Creature that dwells in the depths of Riccioli. It may even be the same kind as Lorelei, who we met in the Nimbus Sanctum.
Phoebe: With the Tidebreaker absent, the restless Reverberations of the departed likely accumulated in her body. Those lost souls were coaxing her to enchant the fishermen.
Phoebe: She and the Tidebreaker share a symbiotic relationship. However, she is still weak, not quite as fully formed as Lorelei.
Phoebe: I believe she was the one mending Tidebreaker's wounds...
Rover:
Phoebe: Time to put our experience in the Nimbus Sanctum to good use. I'm certain we can make it work.
Phoebe: It's just...
Phoebe: Rover, do you happen to speak the whale's language?
Rover:
Phoebe: I'd like to sit down and have a nice chat with Tidebreaker once this is all over.
Phoebe: But for now, let's make our way to find Captain Ahab.
Find Ahab
Examine the note left behind by Ahab
Ahab's Note: Damn you, you cold-blooded beast I've struggled so much to conquer...
Ahab's Note: I've gone old, and the curse you laid upon me ends today... But I will fight you till the very end.
Ahab's Note: I'll run you down, come hell or high water!
Ahab's Note: O waves, unleash your fury upon me! Increase your might to the storm that carries me to my coming doom!
Ahab's Note: Men of Pequod! Our promised rest is nigh!
Ahab's Note: The whirlpools that once claimed my life, and the tempest that once filled my sails, I now call upon you! And that beast as well!
Ahab's Note: Come! Let us sever these bonds that bind us as we dive into the abyss to embrace our fate!
Ishmael: Rover! You have returned!
Rover:
Ishmael: I overheard that the Pequod was ready to sail, so I headed over to take a look.
Ishmael: But by the time I arrived, the beach was empty, and I only found Planck over there.
???: Well, if it isn't my First Mate, Rover?
Rover:
Brant: This is quite the ship you've got here. Looks like it's seen better days though.
Rover:
Brant: It seems you've grown a strong connection with it.
Brant: A few days ago, Ahab summoned me to take helm of this fine vessel…
Rover:
Brant: To be honest, I haven't the slightest clue. By the way, where are you now?
Brant: Is that your Gondola that's sailing away into the waves?
Brant: Hello! Yoo-hoo!
???: I'm coming to see you, my love!
Ishmael: It's Starbuck!
Ishmael: The scoundrel's hightailing with the boat!
Brant: You there! Stop!
Starbuck: The might of my love can withstand any tempest, for it is ever stronger!
Brant: That's... He's heading straight into the storm! After him! The man's lost it!
Planck: Bloop...
Planck seems frightened by something. Guess the shop's closed for business for now...
Meet Brant aboard "Pequod" to set sail
Brant: This ship doesn't seem to require a full crew to operate. A captain will suffice.
Brant: All set and ready for sail?
Rover:
Brant: It appears that Pequod wasn't able to escape its fate after all...
Brant: Alas, my duty as acting captain has been fulfilled. Farewell, my friends!
Wait for Phoebe to recover. Adjust the time to between 4:00 and 9:00
Go investigate Cetus the Tidebreakder near Reyes Island
Phoebe: The Tidebreaker...
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...!
Abby: Oh, hey, big guy! Nice to see you again!
Abby: I still remember when you flipped over our boat last time, you know. But considering you just saved us, I'll call it even! Hmph... Like the old Jinzhou saying, something like "Big folks let little things slide!"
Rover:
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...!
Abby: The big guy says that "siren" helped care for its wounds, but then she went cuckoo after sucking in too many Reverberations.
Abby: That's why it didn't want to fight her earlier. After teaching her a lesson, maybe she'll know better.
Phoebe: Tidebreaker. I... I have something to ask you!
Phoebe: Have you fully recovered?
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...
Abby: Of course it is! Look at it live and kicking. It's never been better.
Phoebe: You were tricked and deceived during the Carnevale... I know that an Acolyte like me is in no position to represent the Order...
Phoebe: But I still wish to offer you an apology, Cetus the Tidebreaker, even if it's only my own.
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...? ...
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...
Abby: It says don't beat yourself up over it.
Abby: You've been following its trail all this time, helping fishermen and receiving gifts of the sea yourself. It's trying to protect that stuff, too.
Abby: Oh! It also wants me to tell you great job on catching that big fish earlier!
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...
Abby: "Just be yourself, whether it's giving or receiving, belief or hope," it says.
Phoebe: I see. Thank you for telling me that!
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...?!
Abby: Sure we are! Nothing stands in our way when we tag team!
Rover:
Rover:
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...
Abby: Uhh, what's up, big fella? Cat got your tongue?
Cetus the Tidebreaker: ...!
Phoebe: Are they... laughing?
Abby: Whoa!!!
Abby: W-W-Where do you think you're goin'? Oh, I'm so catching that whale someday. Just you wait and see!
Bouton de Rose: ...!
The Gondola loaded with cargo seems to be saying, "Give me money and I'll give you goodies!"

Ishmael: Everything's returned to how it once was… To be honest, Rover, Captain Ahab and his crew met their fate at sea decades ago.
Ishmael: Their love of the sea and their promise to Cetus the Tidebreaker is what kept their spirits lingering here.
Ishmael: And now, the peaceful waters of Riccioli mark their final resting place. This is their "final harbor."
Ishmael: But the Rachel still sails on, and it seems to have taken a liking to you.
Ishmael: I believe that Captain Ahab also hoped you'd carry on his legacy...
Rover:
Ishmael: Me? I'm just a simple sailor and fisherman. I was born here, and I'll probably get married and have children here too. Eventually, I'll find my peace in these very waters.
Ishmael: So set sail, Captain Rover! Your journey leads to the very edge of the world.
